Recommended lists essential for grassland producers

May 2 2013

Producers who want to optimise their grassland performance should consult the Recommended Grass and Clover Lists (RGCL) handbook for 2013, which is now available.

With input costs increasing year-on-year, selecting the right grass type and seed mixture  which best suits individual systems and situations is essential in improving grassland performance in terms of achieving higher yields, increased quality and improved consistency.

Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales, DairyCo and EBLEX have worked with the British Society of Plant Breeders (BSPB) and the British Grassland Society (BGS) to produce the annual RGCL handbook for Wales and England.

This year also sees the launch of the new full RGCL for England and Wales. This has been aimed at industry specialists to aid producers in their variety selections and seed mixtures.

The full RGCL provides additional detail, including performance measures for seasonal growth and agronomic characteristics including ground cover and winter hardiness. The tables also provide information on which companies the seed is available from, which is useful when developing mixtures.

This year’s lists include eight new varieties including five varieties of tetraploid perennial ryegrass; the early variety Carriag, intermediate varieties AberClyde, Aston Bonus and Pensel, and the late variety Alfonso. Other new varieties included in the lists are the diploid Italian ryegrass Javorio, the tetraploid hybrid ryegrass Palmata and the white clover Buddy.

The handbook and full RGCL are available to download at, together with a spreadsheet of the full data set.
