New system to boost demand for Welsh Lamb at home and abroad

Jul 20 2015

New overseas markets continue to offer great opportunities for exporters of Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef, according to Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales.

“We are hopeful that we will soon be able to export to the USA and to more countries in the Middle East,” HCC Chairman Dai Davies told a breakfast reception on the opening day of the Royal Welsh Show.

“Wales is the largest sheep producing region in Europe and the largest exporter in volume not only to the EU but also to third countries,” he said.

“We are therefore pleased to have received a second tranche of funding from the EU to further develop our export trade, particularly to Scandinavia which we believe offers great potential to our exporters.

“We are also grateful to the Welsh Government for their £400,000 investment through enhanced funding over the last year.

“Our analysis shows that this has resulted in a huge £6.1 million return from the international marketplace, which is excellent news for the Welsh economy.”

Mr Davies said there was no doubt that HCC’s involvement with EID Cymru will boost demand for Welsh Lamb both at home and abroad.

EID Cymru is a new Welsh sheep electronic recording system and database. It will enable sheep movements to be traced through the supply chain, and will provide Wales with a robust movement and traceability system.

“I feel confident that this is a development that will be welcomed by the industry,” said Mr Davies.

“Once fully operational, EID Cymru will play an important role in providing both domestic and international buyers with additional reassurance over the traceability and provenance of Welsh Lamb.”
